About
the Tournament
The Open Klatovy chess tournament has been one of the traditional and important events on the Czech chess calendar for more than three decades. The first edition was held in 1993, and since then the tournament has earned a reputation as a well-organized chess festival that attracts players of all strength levels to Klatovy every year at the beginning of July.
The tournament is well known for its rich accompanying program and friendly atmosphere. In recent years, the number of participants has regularly been around two hundred players, making Open Klatovy one of the largest open chess tournaments in the Czech Republic.
Open Klatovy consists of three sections:
• Section A for players with an Elo rating of 1800–2800
• Section B for players with an Elo rating of 1000–2000
• Section C, open exclusively to players aged 50 and above
Section C, held as the Ing. Jaromír Novák Memorial, named after a long-standing legend of Klatovy chess, is a unique feature of the festival. The concept of a tournament intended exclusively for senior players is unique within the Czech Republic.
